The Marketing Disenchanted Podcast

CONTEXT TRUMPS CONTENT: Content out of context not only isn't the King of anything, but can do real harm. Young professionals had best think twice before drinking the un-college kool-aid touted by the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk, John Lee Dumas and other digital marketing thought leaders. In this podcast we obliterate the over-glamorized hype & fluff associated with professional digital marketing and tell it like it is from a variety of perspectives. Save yourself some heartache and sober up on The Marketing Disenchanted Podcast.

Rob Zaleski is a professional blogger with a passion for social media and digital relationships. In his previous position with MarketingProfs he reported directly to Ann Handley (which I would kill for) and acted as the social hub for all departments at MarketingProfs (except the main Twitter handle, belongs squarely to Ann Handley) and worked to constantly feed the ever-hungry funnel.

Follow Rob on Twitter at @robzie_. He can also be found on LinkedIn, as well as https://robzie.com/lets-work-together/.

You’ll Learn:

  • How Robs used social media and good ole’ networking to land his previous position at MarketingProfs.com.
  • How curiosity can save you from professional disillusionment.
  • The hard-skills Rob wishes he would have learned in school.
  • Why listening is an underutilized skill.
  • How to lead with value when forming reaching out to influencers.
  • It’s not about money, but S.A.P.S. = Status, Access, Power, Stuff
  • Why you should use Twitter to form relationships prior to attending an event.

3 Key Points:

  1. Always be curious. Always be learning.
  2. There’s no one-size fits all in social media management.
  3. The connections made at conferences are often times more valuable than the sessions.

In this tell-all episode I cover the difference between free and at not cost, and how to work for free without going into the red. It’s important to understand the distinction between the two as it informs much of the show. I also share a super embarrassing story of an ill-fated email I sent to Jay Baer as I was figuring all of this out.

Temi is the co-author of Beyond Buzzwords: Social Media, Mobile & Other Marketing Buzzwords Ain’t the Half of It!; and partner at Digital Marketing Advisers, a digital agency based in Atlanta, GA. Follow Michelle on Twitter at @tembo8482. You can also find Temi on LinkedIn, as well as http://ConsultTemi.com.

You’ll Learn:

  • The show avatar – whom this podcast is talking to specifically
  • The real reason I ask the questions the way I ask them.
  • The difference between free and at no cost
  • How access to capital can be a real hurdle online, and must be addressed
  • How to work for free without going into debt

3 Key Points:

  1. Not knowing how to work for free can needlessly strain professional relationships.
  2. The show avatar, Lamar, drank the “un-college” kool-aid, and then hit the access to capital wall online. This is something to consider before thumbing your nose at College and financial aid.
  3. Be willing to work for free, but still request that budget costs be covered, billed directly to the client.

James Loomstein: With more than 15 years experience in strategic planning, digital marketing and consumer insights, James Loomstein is all about staying a step ahead of the digital marketing status quo.

James is the managing partner at agency Rogue Marketing and adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business. Follow Rogue Marketing on Twitter at @RogueThink and follow James at @jloomstein. You can also find him on LinkedIn

You’ll Learn:

  • The lonely realities of running your own agency vs working for a brand or agency and why it might behoove you to work for a brand
  • Have a hard skill you’re known for i.e. kicker on a football team.
  • Why being a CMO today is damn near unfair compared to pre-Internet times.
  • The challenges of bringing up the next crop of professional digital marketers
  • How the psychology of marketing is being devalued over metrics
  • In the corporate world your real job is to not get fired.
  • The amount of non-billable time that goes into a billable hour can be significant.
  • Digital Marketing is over-glamorized.

3 Key Points:

  1. It’s better to be a meaningful specific than a wandering generality.
  2. Follow people, not positions. Stop trying to manipulate search engines and learn about people.
  3. You don’t have to be the best in the world; you just have to be the best in your world.

Dec 11, 2016

In the last three months of the 2016 Presidential election fake news outperformed real news on Facebook. Without getting political, the point I’d like to pull out is that most people can’t call B.S. online when they see it. They lack what I call digital discernment, which is a skill they must be learned.

This is in strake contrast to the “un-College” movement that touts self-study via search engines over higher education. Just Google-ing it can work, assuming you know how to make heads or tails out of the results; which as we’ve seen above most people can’t!

You’ll Learn:

  • Consider the source: most people telling you not to go to College either have no formal education or have degrees unrelated to digital marketing.
  • The real pros and cons of a degree in Digital Marketing from someone who actually has one.
  • How Web 2.0 has fundamentally changed the Internet and how Google works.
  • The Paradox of Choice: the more options you have the harder it becomes to make a decision.
  • Social proof can be gamed. Rating and reviews are easily manipulated.
  • HORROR STORY: Black-hat info can get you de-indexed from Google without you even knowing it.

3 Key Points:

  1. Context trumps content: Just Google-ing only works if you can call B.S. online. Most people can’t!
  2. Access to Capital: There is indeed a lot of valuable free content online, but the top shelf info still needs to be paid for. Often times you’re looking at tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket.
  3. College vets the info you’re exposed to so you never have to worry about any MLMs or black-hat tactics being passed off on you.
