The Marketing Disenchanted Podcast

CONTEXT TRUMPS CONTENT: Content out of context not only isn't the King of anything, but can do real harm. Young professionals had best think twice before drinking the un-college kool-aid touted by the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk, John Lee Dumas and other digital marketing thought leaders. In this podcast we obliterate the over-glamorized hype & fluff associated with professional digital marketing and tell it like it is from a variety of perspectives. Save yourself some heartache and sober up on The Marketing Disenchanted Podcast.

Greg Verdino is the author of 'microMARKETING: Get Big Results by Thinking and Acting Small' (McGraw-Hill, 2010), and co-authored a chapter in 'Reinventing Interactive and Direct Marketing' (ed. Stan Rapp, McGraw-Hill, 2009). Over the years he’s appeared in a wide range of media including Advertising Age, Bloomberg Business, CNN, Fox Business, Investor’s Business Daily, the New York Times, Newsday, and the Wall Street Journal. He’s written for the American Marketing Association, MediaPost, OMMA magazine, and his own blogs.

Greg is also the managing partner at VERDINO & CO | A Content Consultancy. They help organizations craft smart content strategy and translate that into the creation of high quality (mostly digital) content that really works. He also rescues websites that no longer work for their owners. His clients have included FIS Global, MicroEdge+Blackbaud, Great Hill Partners, Campbell Soup Company, and several agencies that use us as their outsourced content strategy team.

Follow Greg on Twitter at @GregVerdino, as well as his agency @verdino_co. He can also be found on LinkedIn, as well as GregVerdino.com and Verdino & Co.

You’ll Learn:

  • How Greg went from sociology major to professional marketer.
  • How his skills as a sociologist translates in today’s social media landscape.
  • How formal business education could have furthered Greg’s career.
  • Industry thought leaders are more accessible than ever.
  • Nothing new ever seems to kill off anything old; it just changes forms.
  • There needs to be more opportunities for marketers to think and act strategically.

3 Key Points:

  1. Roll up your sleeves and get it done.
  2. A lot of digital marketing thought leadership is recycled; there doesn’t seem to be enough institutional knowledge to get our thinking & strategy ahead.
  3. Many consumers of information have not been taught how to think critically and discern what’s being put in front of them.

The Internet of Things or IOT is so exciting! It seems what was previously deemed sci-fi is becoming more of a reality every day. However it’s not all sunshine and roses. There are very real privacy concerns that can turn the Internet of Things into the Internet of Threats! In this episode I separate AI and the IOT from sci-fi, and explore the implications for marketers.

Temi is the co-author of Beyond Buzzwords: Social Media, Mobile & Other Marketing Buzzwords Ain’t the Half of It!; and partner at Digital Marketing Advisers, a digital agency based in Atlanta, GA. Follow Michelle on Twitter at @tembo8482. You can also find Temi on LinkedIn, as well as http://ConsultTemi.com.

You’ll Learn:

  • The far-reaching effects of The Internet of Things (IOT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Why I don’t have a grim outlook on IOT.
  • How IOT changes the concept of informed consent.
  • How IOT could potentially become the Internet of Threats.
  • Mobile/Connected Living has quietly been gaining ground.

3 Key Points:

  1. The Internet of Things isn’t coming; it’s here!
  2. IOT challenges the notion of informed consent.
  3. Everything that can receive a wireless signal is a mobile device, so you probably have more than you think.
